The meme that I have chosen to analyze is “Texts from Hillary”. These memes originated from a tumblr site and revolve around a picture of Hillary Clinton with her sunglasses on responding to text messages from various people. The tumblr site says it “started as a joke at the bar between two friends turned into a national conversation about Secretary Clinton and went as far as talks about 2016.” The original picture used for the meme was by Diana Walker for Time. The meme has two pictures one on top of the other, the top picture being the person who is texting Hillary and the bottom picture being Hillary responding with a sassy, sarcastic comment. This meme became so popular that the Secretary of State posted her own version of the meme.

The reason I chose this meme is because I think it is really funny and also enjoy how it gave a new persona to Hillary. When she was the Secretary of State she was the one who advised the President and the person people go to for advice.

Thanks Hill!

She did a lot of damage control with foreign affairs and was seen as the woman who would get things done. She knew when to put her foot down and stand up to Congress and can be considered one of the most powerful women in America. Even though she endured harsh criticism during her tenure she prevailed through it with her head held high. I think this particular meme sums it up the best:

HBIC: Head Bitch In Charge

Most of the communicating we do now is through mobile technology, even in our poilitcal system. I think this meme works so well is because people who need to get in contact with Hillary can directly text her and have a response and it is nice to see a person who is relatable and responds with snarky comments much like we would with our friends. However, there is one key element that is in this meme that is vital to tone it is trying to convey; her sunglasses. Regarding semiotics, sunglasses are not just for protecting eyes from sunlight but can give someone an image of being fabulous and sassy. I strongly believe the sunglasses along with the unphased face makes the meme what it is. Covering her eyes is important because by doing so, it is more difficult to tell what someone is thinking. Hillary is the Head Bitch in Charge and her time is important and you may not be worthy of a text back, if you are you may get a cheeky response.

Except the equally fabulous Meryl Streep. 10:30 okay?

Hillary has been called a “cold bitch” but with this meme she is a sassy, fabulous independant and strong woman. This is important because there has been a lot of talk of Hillary running for President in 2016 and she left her position as Secretary of State with favorable reviews. This meme not only makes her relatable and shows she has a sense of humor but that she can do things all by herself.

That’s right!

  1. I think this is a great meme and a great post. I was wondering do you think that he entertaining this meme of herself changes the way she is viewed as a politician? I mean she is probably more popular with the younger generation but what does this do for her career?

  2. A very well written post that gets at specifically just why this meme works and how it increases respect for Hillary. Given that many memes ridicule the person it showcases, Hillary’s “owning” of this meme just makes her seem that much stronger. Your choice and placement of visual examples (especially the last one) effectively builds your argument.
